study questions:
1. Read verses 16-18. What were the disciples doing? How would you describe the situation the disciples found themselves in? Why do you think Jesus wasn’t with them?
2. Read verses 19-21. How far had the disciples been rowing and how far did Jesus walk on the water? How did the disciples initially respond to Jesus walking on the water? How would you have responded in this situation? What happened when Jesus got into the boat? Do you think their arrival “immediately” was simply timing or another miracle? Why or why not?
Read verses 22-24. How did the crowd respond to the absence of Jesus? What did they think happened to Jesus? What did the crowd do next?
3. Read Matthew 14:22-33. This is Matthew’s account and perspective of when Jesus walked on water. Take some time to compare John’s account with Matthew’s account. What is different? What is the same? Do you agree this is the same event written from different perspectives? Why or why not? What specifically from Matthew helps you to better understand what happened that night?
4. So what? What is your overall response to this miracle? What can you learn about Jesus that encourages you in your faith? What can you learn from the disciples about how to walk with Jesus through life? What is one thing you are taking away from this discussion that applies specifically to your life?
