study questions:

1. Read verses 1-3. These three verses summarize Jonah’s experience when he was thrown in into the sea (1:15). What does Jonah focus on in verse 2 as he recounts his experience? Why do you think this is his focus? Who does Jonah hold responsible for his experience in verse 3? What is Jonah’s attitude? Why is this important?

2. Read verses 4-7. In this section Jonah describes his experience in more detail. What happened to Jonah when he was thrown into the sea? How did Jonah respond? How do you believe God responds to people who have a bad attitude with Him, but change their attitude when they experience something difficult? Why?

3. Read verse 8-10. What do you think verse 8 means? How does this verse serve as a warning to us for how to live our lives? How would you summarize Jonah’s heart toward God in verse 9? What words does Jonah use to praise God? How can these same words be used by us to praise God today?

So what. Has there ever been a difficult time in your life when you cried out to God and he answered you? Take a few moments to recount this time in your life. How would you describe Jonah’s perspective toward God as God brought divine discipline into his life? How do you interact with God when you have difficult times? What can you learn from Jonah for how to relate to God when you are “drowning” in a difficult or emotional time? Why is this kind of response difficult?
