study questions:
For the Next Lesson – Genesis 39:1-23
1. Read verses 1-6. What happened to Joseph after he was sold into slavery by his brothers? How can we see the presence of God in Joseph’s life? How do you think Joseph felt about all of this… being a slave in a foreign country, yet God giving him “success” as a slave?
2. Read verses 7-10. What else happened to Joseph as he served Potiphar? How did Joseph respond? What characterized Joseph’s view of sin in verse 9 (see also Psalm 51:4)? Do you view your own sin the same way? Why or why not? Why is it important that we see our sin this way?
3. Read verses 11-15. What did Potiphar’s wife do, and how did Joseph respond? What can we learn from Joseph about how to respond to temptation (see also 1 Corinthians 6:18, 10:13; 2 Timothy 2:22)?
4. Read verses 16-20. How did Potiphar respond to his wife’s accusations against Joseph? What did Joseph say, and what happened next to Joseph? How do you think Joseph felt at this moment? Have you ever felt like this in your own life?
5. Read verses 21-23. How would you describe Joseph’s experience in prison? How did God relate to Joseph? Do you trust God to treat you the same way in your life?
6. So what. Take some time consider one take-away from this passage that applies directly to your life. Is there a sin you need to confess? A truth about God you need to embrace? A principle about life you need to put in place?
