For the Next Lesson: Matthew 28:1-15
1. Read verses 1-4.Who went to Jesus’s tomb and when did they go? What did these people experience when they arrived at the tomb? Take a few moments to imagine yourself in their place at the tomb. What did they see? Smell? Feel? Hear? Who did they meet and what was that person like? What do you think would have impressed you the most about the situation if you were there?
2. Read verses 5-8.What was the angel’s explanation to the women about Jesus? When did Jesus predict He would rise from the dead (see Matthew 16:21, 17:23, 20:19)? What did the Angel tell the women to do? What did the women do next and how were they feeling? How do the instructions given to these women apply to us today (see Matthew 28:16-20)? Do you respond to instructions from Jesus with the same attitude, promptness and passion of these ladies? Why or why not?
3. Read verses 9-10. What happened next to these ladies? Why do you think Jesus appeared first to these women? How did they respond? What instructions were given by Jesus, and how do these instructions compare to the angel’s instructions from verses 5-7? Why do think Jesus gave these instructions? Is your attitude toward Jesus similar to the attitude displayed by these women in verse 9? What could help you to more fully come to your knees before Jesus and worship Him like these women?
4. Read verses 11-15. What did the soldiers and Jewish leaders do in response to Jesus’ resurrection? Why do you think it is important that Matthew noted the response of the soldiers and Jewish leaders? How do these verses highlight the spiritual battle, and how do they add credibility to the resurrection of Jesus?
5. So what. How has your study of this passage challenged or encouraged you about your faith in Jesus Christ? How has your view of God been influenced? How can you grow in your actions and attitude in response the Gospel of Jesus Christ?
