study questions:

1. Read Matthew 4:24-5:2 and Matthew 7:28-29. As we begin to study the Sermon on the Mount, try to discover who was in Jesus’ audience during the sermon. A disciple is anyone who has begun to follow (in this case it was Jesus).

2. Read Matthew chapters 5-7. This sermon is Jesus teaching to a Jewish audience who are still under the Law of Moses. Can you see how he might be teaching them pure law and that the sermon is a demonstration that a person cannot get a ticket into heaven by observing the law? This is a very difficult question so don’t dwell on it too long.

3. Read Matthew 5:3-10. Taking each one of these attitudes to mean spiritual attitudes, write what each one means and then try to say what the blessing means. Ex: Poor in spirit means recognition that you are a sinner and are spiritually bankrupt. The blessing is the kingdom of God which means salvation as a result of your recognition of spiritual bankruptcy.

4. Read Matthew 5:11-12. What is the blessing for this beatitude? What do you think rewards in heaven will be like?

5. Which of all these beatitudes is most meaningful to you?

6. In what way do verses 11-12 indicate Jesus thought of himself as a very special person?

7. What do you think God wants you to learn this week from your study?
