study questions:
1. Read verses 1-4. Why do you think the hearts of the disciples were “troubled” (see John 8:21, 13:21, 13:38; Luke 22:31-32; Matthew 26:31)? What did Jesus say to encourage the “troubled” disciples? Why do think Jesus’ words would have been encouraging to the disciples? Are Jesus’ words in these verses encouraging to you? Why or why not?
2. Read verses 5-6. Why do you think Thomas was confused? Do you think he should have understood what Jesus was teaching them? Why or why not? Use verses from John to support your answer if possible. In verse 6 Jesus states the 6th of 7 “I am” statements in John. What point is Jesus making with this “I am” statement? Why do you think Jesus used the specific words “way”, “truth” and “life”? What does each of these words mean, and why are these three words important?
3. Read verses 7-11. What is the idea or concept that Jesus and Philip are discussing? Do you think Philip should have already understand this concept about Jesus (see John 6:19-24)? Why? Jesus speaks about “works” in both verses 10 and 11. Do you personally believe that the works of Jesus (not including the resurrection) are ample evidence to prove Jesus’ identity? Explain your answer.
4. Read verses 12-14. What do think Jesus means when he says the disciples will do “greater works” (see also Acts 2:40-41)? What do the words “in my name” mean in context? If we simply pray in the name of Jesus can we get whatever we want? Why or why not? So, what principle or truth is Jesus teaching both the disciples and us in verses 13 and 14?
5. So what? What is one thing from this passage that encourages you in your walk with God? What do you learn from these verses that influences the way you interact with unbelievers?
